Nordhell Cover - Awadaday reviews everyday a random DOOM WAD from the idgames archive. Today a level was reviewed that I suggested: Nordhell. Yay!

I played Nordhell back in 2008, as can be seen from this old blog post (german).

Timelapse out of my window

I played with PyLapse today. Three hours in three minutes…

Captured with my webcam out of my window.

bash autocd

To save typing, set in your .bashrc

shopt -s autocd

Now, you just do directory instead of cd directory.

Works with bash versions > 4. For more cool stuff, check Section 4.3.2 of bash manual.

Firefox - GTK Dark Theme Fix

Using a dark KDE (or GTK native) color theme (e.g. zenburn) causes content in form input elements to be illegible. This known Firefox bug basically renders the browser unusable on many webpages, that do not come with custom CSS rules for their forms.

Use the Stylish Firefox add-on to create a custom global rule no dark forms and buttons:

    input:not(.urlbar-input):not(.textbox-input) {
        -moz-appearance: none !important;
        background-color: white;
        color: black;

    #downloads-indicator-counter {
        color: white;

    textarea {
        -moz-appearance: none !important;
        background-color: white;
        color: black;

    select {
        -moz-appearance: none !important;
        background-color: white;
        color: black;

Succsesfully tested with Firefox version 31.

Discogs, Google & DuckDuckGo - Dark Themes

I prefer using a dark theme on my desktop. However, now most of the brighter styled web-sites look “alien” when opened in my browser. The solution is “re-theming” those sites using custom CSS styles. The Firefox (or Chrome) plug-in Stylish helps to manage such custom styles, and ten-thousands of styles are available on

Cubehelix as Default in ds9

I love Dave Green’s cubehelix color scheme for visualization of astronomical intensity datasets (e.g. images).

In fact, I love it so much, that I want it to be the default in SAOImage ds9. A little alias does the trick for me:

alias ds9='~/local/bin/ds9 -cmap file ~/local/lib/cubehelix00.ds9'

Here the file cubehelix00.ds9 must be obtained from this page.

Convert List of PNG Files to MJPEG using mencoder

Suppose you have list of single frames

from which you want to generate a Motion JPEG (MJpeg) movie.

Assuming you have mencoder (part of mplayer), the following command does the trick:

mencoder mf://*png -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mjpeg -mf fps=35 -o movie.mjpg

Test of Inline Math

a+b=c and a2+b2=c2 but a3+b3c3.

My favorite integral: 0xn-1e-xdx=Γ(n)=(n-1)!, where the last equality is only true if n.

Okay... Works ;-)
